After my visit yesterday to the ‘MCRDS2012’ conference, I was hugely inspired from the youngest of all the designers there, Will Hudson. The other five were highly inspirational, but I felt it was easier to relate to Will, simply because of his age and lack of experience (in comparison), which all the others had behind them.

As usual Adrian Shaughnessy didn’t disappointed with his inspiring talk on the economy and design. He knows exactly what to say. He will just say it as it is, and I think this is the best way as it makes you realise exactly what is wrong or right.

Jason Smith was interesting to listen to, from how he creates all these detailed fonts to his argument in the panel discussion about piracy. He had a massively important point that piracy is steeling and to him and his business. This is serious as it is already such a niche market and it is becoming even smaller because of people steeling his fonts. Whereas, for graphic designers like Will Hudson or Vera-Maria Glahn, it is the complete opposite, to them it is good. It is good because it spreads their work to the masses and makes their businesses more of an exclusive luxury thing, which works pretty well. A lot like with the Adobe suites, pretty much every student ‘steels’ their programmes, of that I’m sure they know, and they get highly skilled within these all throughout their high education. Then, once looking for a full-time job, they then have to start paying for it; as it is the only set of programmes they are skilled in to do their work. In the long run piracy works for most business, I would say.

Also, I loved the welcome package we all received. Very well done, nice to see it was definitely worth paying £25, as initial thoughts were, expensive!? Money well spent.

Recently I’ve just been using this typeface so much, it is so fitting for so many different styles. It has a business formality to it, whilst still being very modern and also very interesting and appealing to look at and use.

Although, I could see it becoming a little annoying because of the fairly high x-height of the lower case letters. For example, the ‘a’, that letter would be first out of this family.

We had to create our own stationery set as a mini project at university, making it unique to us. So to make it unique to me I decided to design myself a brand new logo. After hours of research on myself, writing everything down I could possible think of, I started sketching ideas out. All leaning towards rounded styles using a circle as the base point. Eventually I came up with a logical solution to it - my initials. Since I was a very logical person in the way I designed, I thought why not make myself a logical logo. And here it is, a logical logo, made up of my initials.

Manchester Design Symposium 2012:

Bought my ticket last week for £25. Seems a little steep, until you check out the line up of speakers. I’m quiet pleased Adrian Shaughnessy is attending out of all of them. He’s a really an inspiring designer. I’ll post again about the Symposium once I’ve been next Wednesday 12-6pm.

I’ve got so much inspiration coming from this style at the moment, it’s so relevant and simplistically styled. I really enjoy this guys work on here. I can see this style really taking off. I will definitely try and include this style in my own work.

I’ve created this blog for all the inspiration and ideas I come across. This will be for my current work or just in general. Most of the posts here will be text based, I would think, as they will just be posts about my ideas. This may change though as I progress through my blog, who knows. For now it will be mainly about my university work.

To give you a little flavour of what I do and like;

I’m Chris, third year graphic design student at The University of Bolton, my interests lie within branding, identity, logos, layouts, grids, using a little math in design, colour, typography, print, photography (probably more of a hobby), apps and signage.
